Women's Long Chunky Cardigan Jacket

What you’ll make: A fast, super-chunky long cardigan with deep broken-rib texture, in-seam pockets, wide picked-up collar and neat set-in sleeves; designed with an oversized, modern fit.

Sizing/Measurements: To-fit bust 30–32 in [76–81 cm], 34–36 in [86–91 cm], 38–40 in [97–102 cm]; actual approx 43 in [110 cm], 47 in [119 cm], 51 in [129 cm]; length 16 in [41 cm]; sleeve seam 16 in [41 cm] (all sizes).

Yarn: Super-chunky (Super Bulky/CYC #6) yarn; approx 8 balls total depending on put-up and size (swatch to calculate).

Needles & notions: 10 mm (US 15) straight needles (or size to get tension); stitch holders/threads; tapestry needle; optional detachable shoulder pads.

Tension (gauge): 11 sts to 5 in [13 cm] in pattern on 10 mm; ≈ 8.5–9 sts × 12–14 rows = 10 cm after light blocking (adjust needle size to match).

Construction notes: Worked flat in 4 pieces (Back, Left Front, Right Front, Sleeves) in broken-rib; pocket pouches formed at Back and sewn to Fronts; armholes shaped; sleeves set in; collar picked up across front neck edges plus live sleeve-top and back-neck stitches; cast off in pattern; light block to measurements.

Skill level: Confident Beginner–Intermediate (read shaping while maintaining rib; pick up and knit evenly; standard seaming).

Yarn Suggestions: UK/EU: Rowan Big Wool; DROPS Snow. USA/Canada: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick; Cascade Lana Grande. Antipodean: Patons Inca 14-ply (work looser on 9–10 mm); Bendigo Woollen Mills Chunky.

Yarn Suggestions Disclaimer

The yarns listed are suggested alternatives chosen to match the pattern’s yarn weight, gauge, and general fabric characteristics. They are not endorsements, and Marle & Row receive no compensation from any manufacturer. Always knit and block a tension swatch and adjust your needle size to obtain the stated gauge before beginning. If your chosen yarn has different meterage per ball or a different fibre composition (for example, superwash, cotton, linen, viscose, or acrylic blends), you may need to adjust the quantity purchased and expect differences in drape, warmth, and stitch definition. Substitutions are at the knitter’s discretion, and it is advisable to buy a little extra yarn to allow for swatching, matching dye lots, and any personal modifications.
