Long Sleeved Lacy Smock & Cap Sleeved Long Waistcoat – Crochet Pattern Duo (PDF) Instant Digital Knitting Pattern Download

What you’ll make A coordinating two-piece crochet set: a long sleeved lacy smock with softly flared skirt and delicate yoke, plus a cap sleeved long waistcoat worked in an open, drapey stitch pattern. Both garments are designed to layer together or to be worn separately as light, elegant wardrobe staples.

Sizing / Measurements Smock to fit bust 81.5 [86.5:91.5] cm (32 [34:36] in), with approximate length to shoulder 68.5 [70.0:71.0] cm and sleeve seam 31.0 cm. Waistcoat to fit bust 81.5 [86.5:91.5:96.5] cm (32 [34:36:38] in), with approximate length to shoulder 94.0 [95.0:96.5:98.0] cm. Designed with a light, easy fit that works well layered over fine tops or dresses.

Yarn Lightweight crepe-effect yarn with good drape, in a 4 ply / light sport category or similar. Smock: approximately 10 [10:11] x 50 g balls (around 500–550 g in total, depending on size). Waistcoat: approximately 12 [12:13:14] x 25 g balls (around 300–350 g in total, depending on size). Solid or gently heathered shades show the lace detail clearly; avoid very busy variegated colourways if you want the stitch patterns to stand out.

Needles & notions Worked with crochet hooks rather than knitting needles: 3.00 mm and 2.50 mm hooks for the smock; 3.00 mm, 3.50 mm and 4.00 mm hooks for the waistcoat (or sizes needed to obtain tension). You will also need 3 buttons for the smock, 6 buttons for the waistcoat, plus stitch markers and a tape measure for accurate sizing and armhole placement.

Tension (gauge) Smock: 24 stitches and 13 rows to 10 cm over treble crochet on a 3.00 mm hook, measured after light blocking. Waistcoat: 14 pattern stitches and 15 rows to 12.5 cm over the all-over pattern on a 3.50 mm hook. Always work a tension square in your chosen yarn and adjust hook size if needed to match the pattern gauge.

Yarn suggestions This design works well in smooth, drapey lightweight yarns that show off crochet texture. Suitable options include: from the UK/Europe, a soft 4 ply cotton or cotton-blend such as Rowan Summerlite 4ply or a lightweight acrylic-blend like Stylecraft Life 4 ply; from North America, a fine fingering or sport-weight wool or wool-blend such as Cascade Heritage or Knit Picks Stroll; from Australasia, a classic 4 ply wool such as Cleckheaton Country 4 ply or a similar local 4 ply crepe yarn. Choose yarns with good stitch definition and a soft hand for the best finish.

Construction notes The long sleeved smock is worked in pieces: the yoke and upper body in treble crochet, then a repeating lace pattern is worked downwards to form the skirt, with shaped sleeves and a neat crochet edging. The cap sleeved long waistcoat is worked in one piece to the underarm, then divided for back and fronts with shaped armholes and neckline, before adding simple cap sleeves and a tidy front edging with buttonholes. Both garments are finished with straightforward borders and seaming, and are designed to be approachable for crocheters who are comfortable reading row-by-row instructions.

Skill level Intermediate. Suitable for crocheters confident with basic stitches (chain, double crochet, treble crochet, slip stitch) and comfortable working from written instructions that include shaping, simple decrease techniques and repeating lace patterns. Not a first-ever project, but a manageable, rewarding make if you already have some garment or lace crochet experience.
