Knitting Pattern Aran Panelled Jumper 1197
£4.95
What you’ll make: A classic crew-neck sweater with a broad central Aran cable panel on the front, framed by double seed stitch for clean vertical lines and good structure, with plain double seed stitch back, set-in sleeves and a folded rib neckband for a tidy, substantial finish.
Sizing / Measurements: Written to fit bust 86, 91, 97, 102 cm (34, 36, 38, 40 in) with comfortable ease; approximate finished chest 111, 115, 120, 124 cm and length from shoulder 67, 68, 69, 70 cm; sleeve length from cuff to underarm 46, 47, 48, 49 cm (all measurements are approximate and depend on blocking and yarn choice).
Yarn: Aran / Heavy Worsted (10-ply) 100% wool; approximate total 900–1000 g depending on size (18–20 × 50 g balls, or equivalent yardage of roughly 1,700–2,000 m in total).
Tension (gauge): 18 stitches and 26 rows = 10 cm in double seed stitch using 5.0 mm (US 8) needles, after light blocking; always work a swatch and adjust needle size to match your personal tension.
Recommended yarn: West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft Shetland Aran — Yarn quantities (100 g balls): 9 (9) (9.5) (10).
Also suitable (currently available): Blacker Classic Aran, Studio Donegal Aran Tweed, Jamieson & Smith Shetland Aran, DROPS Alaska, Cascade 220 (Worsted), Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool.
Needles & notions: 4.0 mm (US 6) needles for rib, 5.0 mm (US 8) needles for the main fabric, cable needle, stitch holders or waste yarn, tapestry needle for seaming, and optional markers for chart or panel alignment.
Construction notes: The sweater is worked flat in four main pieces (back, front, two sleeves), beginning with ribbed welts, then continued in double seed stitch with a central Aran cable panel on the front only. Shoulders are shaped and seamed, the folded neckband is picked up and worked in rib, then folded to the inside and stitched down. Sleeves are set in and all seams are joined for a stable, long-wearing garment.
Skill level: Intermediate; suitable for knitters confident with following cable panels, working twisted stitches, shaping in pattern, and seaming a set-in sleeve sweater.
