A statement winter layer with a soft halo finish and a clean, tailored silhouette. This pattern includes instructions for two lengths: a full-length coat and a shorter jacket version.

What you’ll make

A button-through, longline coat and a shorter jacket, both with a deep shawl collar, set-in sleeves with turnback cuffs, and an all-over textured pattern.

Sizing / fit

To fit bust: 30–34 in (76–86 cm) and 36–40 in (91–102 cm).

Finished bust (garment): 43 in (109 cm) and 51 in (130 cm).

Length (measured flat): Coat 40 in (102 cm); Jacket 30 in (76 cm). Note: coat length will drop to approx. 44 in (112 cm) during wear, then return to 40 in (102 cm) when laid flat.

Sleeve length: 16 in (41 cm), excluding turnback cuff.

Yarn

Aran / worsted-weight yarn worked to a firm fabric on 5.5 mm needles (a brushed / blown “halo” yarn is ideal for the original look).

Quantities are based on 50 g balls: Coat 13 (15) balls; Jacket 11 (12) balls.

Fibre options that suit the look: mohair-blend halo yarn, blown alpaca/wool blend, or a soft acrylic “faux-mohair” style yarn.

Needles & notions

4.5 mm (UK 7) needles and 5.5 mm (UK 5) needles.

Stitch holders.

Buttons: 8 for the coat version; 5 for the jacket version.

Tapestry needle and sewing thread to match.

Tension (gauge)

37 stitches and 45 rows = 8 in (20 cm) over the pattern, using 5.5 mm needles (or size needed to match tension).Recommended yarn: Rowan Kid Classic (50 g balls) — Coat: 13 × 50 g (smaller size) or 15 × 50 g (larger size); Jacket: 11 × 50 g (smaller size) or 12 × 50 g (larger size).

Construction notes: Worked in separate pieces (Back, Left Front, Right Front, Sleeves) then seamed. Front bands are knitted separately (buttonhole band and button band) and sewn on. Collar is knitted separately and set in between marked points, then joined into the front bands. Cuffs are turned back and the sleeve seam is reversed for the turnback finish.
