Long Cabled Aran Jacket Coat with Diamond Panels
What you’ll make: A hip-length Aran-weight jacket with structured diamond panels, ribbed cuffs turned up, set-in sleeves, and neat in-seam pockets; finished with a collar that grafts or sews closed for a clean neckline.
Sizing / Measurements: To fit bust 86 (91: 97) cm; finished bust is approx. +15 cm ease; length 107 (108: 108) cm; sleeve seam (with cuff turned up) 42 (42: 42) cm.
Yarn: Aran / heavy-worsted weight, smooth or tweed; total usage approx. 34 (35: 36) balls for smooth or 31 (32: 33) balls for tweed (brand-agnostic).
Needles & notions: 4½ mm needles; cable needle; stitch holders; markers; tapestry needle.
Tension (gauge): 14 sts × 14 rows = 5 cm over panel pattern (check and adjust needle size as needed).
Recommended yarn: Sirdar Country Classic Aran (50 g balls) — 34 (35: 36) balls.
Also suitable (currently available): Rowan Kid Classic (50 g), West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft Aran (100 g), Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Aran (100 g), Stylecraft Special Aran with Wool (100 g), Hayfield Bonus Aran Tweed (100 g).
Construction notes: Worked flat in pieces; fronts include integrated pocket openings and diamond panels framed by cable columns; fronts shaped for armholes, front slope, and shoulders; back shaped to match; pocket linings worked separately in stocking stitch; sleeves worked straight with patterned panels then seamed; collar grafted or seamed; cuffs turned and tacked.
Skill level: Intermediate (cables/twists, pocket openings, shaping while in pattern).
