Lacy Aran Afghan/Blanket
A light, lacy throw with repeating diamond panels and a scalloped openwork border. Sized for sofa or end-of-bed layering; airy drape and quick rhythmic repeats.
What you’ll make: A rectangular crochet blanket approximately 38" × 48" with a lacy diamond centre and 13-round decorative edging.
Yarn: Aran-weight (US: worsted) yarn; approx. 710 g / ~1,460 yds (~1,335 m). Fibre is your choice (wool, blends, or acrylic) — match gauge.
Needles & notions: 4.00 mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge); stitch markers; tapestry needle; blocking tools.
Tension (gauge): In pattern, 2 repeats × 13 rows ≈ 3½" measured over the centre motif. Work a swatch in pattern and adjust hook size to match.
Recommended yarn: Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Aran — 7 × 100 g balls.
Also suitable (currently available): Rowan Kid Classic, Wendy With Wool Aran, Patons Wool Blend Aran, Cascade 220 (Worsted), Malabrigo Rios, Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 10-ply.
(Select by tension/gauge and desired handle; solids or heathers show the lace crisply.)
Construction notes: Centre worked flat from a foundation chain; repeat Rows 2–7 to length; do not fasten off; work Edging Rounds 1–13 in the round around all sides; finish and block to measurements.
Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate (comfortable with chains, double crochet, treble crochet, working into chain spaces, counting repeats).
