Women's Extra-Long Hooded Coat & Hat (bouclé texture, yarn held double)
A dramatic, ankle-grazing coat with integral front bands, fold-back cuffs, deep patch pockets, a seamed hood, matching hat, and a simple belt for waist shaping; sleek stocking stitch [stockinette] fabric with a subtle bouclé ripple.
What you’ll make: A full-length hooded coat with belt and matching hat, worked flat in pieces and seamed for structure; front edges in firm garter stitch; shallow set-in sleeves with turn-back cuffs; applied pockets; two-piece hood joined along the crown and sewn to the neckline.
Sizing/Measurements: Women’s 10–12–14 (original size-12 chart in source is unclear). Typical finished length to shoulder approx 43½–45½ in depending on size; work to personal length as given in the instructions.
Tension (gauge): 13 stitches = 4 in in stocking stitch [stockinette] with yarn held double; swatch and adjust.
Recommended yarn: Rowan Soft Bouclé.
Also suitable: Sirdar Persia Chunky Bouclé; DROPS Alpaca Bouclé (held double if needed to meet tension [gauge]); Katia Soho Alpaca; KnitPicks Bubbly Bouclé; Tribe Yarns Soft Bouclé (undyed).
Needles & notions: Worked at approx 5.5 mm [US 9] to meet gauge (swatch to confirm); straight needles or your preferred flat-knitting setup; stitch holders; 6 buttons (approx 16 mm diameter); large-eyed needle for seaming and finishing. Approx yarn: coat ~40 × 50 g balls (bouclé held double); hat ~70 g.
Construction notes: Pieces are worked flat; front bands are integrated in garter stitch; gentle waist shaping and armholes per pattern; shoulders shaped and seamed; sleeves seamed and set in; cuffs fold back; hood knitted in two mirrored halves, seamed, then attached; patch pockets applied; belt in garter stitch.
Skill level: Improver to Intermediate — straightforward shaping, seaming, and finishing; accurate blocking and consistent tension (gauge) are key for drape and length.
