Classic Toggle-Fastened Raglan Cardigan Coat (DK)

A practical raglan cardigan coat with a neat patterned neckband and distinctive toggle fasteners. Worked mainly in double knitting weight yarn with a contrast shade detail, and finished with a folded, slip-stitched neckband.

What you’ll make A toggle-fastened raglan cardigan coat with long sleeves, contrast detailing, and a shaped neck opening finished with a knit neckband.

Sizing/Measurements To fit chest: 19 in, 20 in, 21 in. Actual garment chest: 21 in, 22 in, 23 in. Length: 11½ in, 12 in, 12½ in. Sleeve seam: 5½ in, 6 in, 6½ in.

Materials Double knitting (DK) yarn in two shades: Main shade and Contrast shade. Approximate yarn amounts (by size) shown as: main shade 6–7 balls; contrast shade 1–2 balls (exact ball counts depend on your chosen ball weight/metreage). You will also need six toggle buttons.

Needles & notions One pair each of knitting needles size 9 and size 10 (as stated in the pattern). Safety pins (or stitch holders) for holding stitches. Tapestry needle for finishing. Sewing needle and thread (or yarn) for attaching toggles.

Tension (gauge) 6 stitches and 8½ rows to 1 square inch over stocking stitch.

Construction notes The body is worked in pieces with raglan shaping, then assembled at the raglan seams. Sleeve tops and fronts are held on safety pins during neck shaping. The neckband is picked up and knitted around the neckline, then folded to the wrong side and slip-stitched down. Toggle fasteners are knitted separately, rolled into tubes, joined into a figure “8”, and stitched in place to align with the toggles.
