Square Lace Shawl (3 Ply / 4 Ply Options)
A classic square shawl worked flat in rows with a patterned, sewn-on border. The pattern includes two versions (3 ply and 4 ply), both finishing at approximately 107 cm × 107 cm (42 in × 42 in) excluding the border.

What you’ll make: One square lace shawl with a separate knitted border sewn on and gathered neatly at the corners; finished size approximately 107 cm × 107 cm (42 in × 42 in), excluding border.

Yarn: Lightweight baby yarn in either 3 ply or 4 ply (two versions included). Quantity: 4 × 100 g balls (or equivalent).

Needles & notions:
3 ply version — 4½ mm needles and a 4½ mm circular needle, 40 cm (approximately 16 in) long.
4 ply version — 5 mm needles and a 5 mm circular needle, 40 cm (approximately 16 in) long.
Notions — tapestry needle for sewing the border; blocking/pressing supplies as preferred.

Tension (gauge):
3 ply version — 12 stitches to 5 cm (approximately 2 in) measured over pattern.
4 ply version — 11 stitches to 5 cm (approximately 2 in) measured over pattern.

Recommended yarn: Sirdar Snuggly 4 Ply (4 ply version) / Sirdar Snuggly 3 Ply (3 ply version) — Yarn quantities (100 g balls): 4

Construction notes: The shawl body is worked back and forth in rows on a short circular needle (used as a straight needle for the wide stitch count). The border is knitted separately to the required length, allowing extra length to gather around the rounded corners, then sewn to the shawl edge with the gathers distributed evenly at each corner.

Skill level: Intermediate (lace techniques, stitch decreases, and sewn-on border finishing).
