Women's Simple & Easy Long Mohair Coat 1173

This loose-fitting, open-front knitted coat is constructed entirely from simple rectangular pieces, making it an ideal beginner-friendly garment for knitters looking to move beyond scarves and wraps. Worked in a lightweight mohair or mohair-blend yarn on large needles, the fabric is soft, airy, and lightly structured, with a subtle textured pattern created by knitting into the stitch below. The relaxed silhouette relies on generous ease and simple seaming rather than shaping, with folded-back fronts forming natural lapels once the garment is assembled. This design is well suited to haloed yarns that bloom after blocking and emphasise drape rather than stitch definition.

A loose, open-front coat worked in a simple two-row textured stitch on large needles. The fit is intentionally roomy and the shape is created by seaming rectangles together, with the fronts folded back to form lapels.

What you’ll make An airy, haloed mohair coat with relaxed drop shoulders, open front, and fold-back lapels secured with buttons.

Sizing/Measurements To fit bust up to: 97 cm (38 in). Actual garment bust: 126 cm (49½ in). Length (shoulder to lower edge): 100 cm (39 in). Sleeve seam: 41 cm (16 in).

Yarn Lightweight mohair or mohair-blend yarn (lace / super-fine mohair style), intended to be worked loosely for drape and halo. Original quantity equivalent: 28 × 25 g balls (approximate; verify by total metreage).

Needles & notions 6 mm (US 10) straight needles. Tapestry needle for seaming. A small number of buttons to tack the folded lapels in place (as desired).

Tension (gauge) 15 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 in), measured over the pattern stitch on 6 mm needles.

Yarn Suggestions Rowan Kidsilk Haze; Sirdar Kid Mohair; Drops Kid-Silk; Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair; Knit Picks Aloft; Berroco Aerial; Cleckheaton Country Silk Mohair.

Construction notes Worked flat in separate pieces (back, two fronts, two sleeves) with no shaping; knit 4 garter rows at the start of each piece, then continue in the two-row texture pattern to length. Sew shoulder seams for 23 cm from the armhole edge toward the neck, set sleeves with the sleeve centre to the shoulder seam, then sew side and sleeve seams. Fold fronts back to form lapels and secure with buttons.

Skill level Easy (first garment level): suitable for knitters comfortable with knit and purl stitches and basic seaming.
