Women’s Edge-to-Edge Chunky Jacket – Knitting Pattern (PDF)
A relaxed, open-front chunky jacket with deep textured fabric, garter-stitch front edges, and neat integrated pockets. Designed for easy layering over shirts or knitwear, it has a straight, comfortable silhouette and simple seamed construction that suits confident beginners and above.

What you’ll make: A hip-length, edge-to-edge women’s jacket with full-length sleeves, garter-stitch front bands, and set-in-style sleeves. The fit is relaxed rather than body-hugging, intended to sit comfortably over everyday clothes.

Sizing: To fit bust 81, 86, 91, 97, 102, 107, 112 cm (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44 in). Length from shoulder approx 59–66 cm (23–26 in) depending on size.

Yarn: Chunky / super-chunky weight yarn in 100 g balls. Approximate total: 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 10) balls, which is roughly 640–900 m / 700–980 yd in total, depending on your chosen yarn and size.

Needles & notions: 7.5 mm and 8 mm knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge). Stitch holder or waste yarn for pocket linings. Tapestry needle for sewing seams and weaving in ends. Optional markers for identifying right side and shaping points.

Tension (gauge): 10 stitches over 10 cm (4 in) in double moss stitch using 8 mm needles, after light blocking. Always adjust needle size if needed to match this gauge before starting the garment.

Yarn suggestions:
Rowan Big Wool – super chunky, soft 100% wool with rounded stitches and strong texture.
Stylecraft Special XL Super Chunky – budget-friendly acrylic, good stitch definition and easy care.
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick – wool–acrylic blend, widely available and robust for everyday wear.
Bernat Softee Chunky – soft acrylic with a dense, cosy fabric and easy washing.
Bendigo Woollen Mills 16 ply (bulky) – Australian wool option; slightly lighter but works well if gauge is matched.
Crucci Natural Wonder Artisan Wool – New Zealand wool with a sturdy, traditional hand, ideal for jackets.

Construction notes: Pieces are worked flat in rows and seamed. The back is worked from hem to shoulders with garter-stitch lower edging, then double moss stitch, then garter again at the upper back. Fronts are worked in the same way, with pockets built in as you go: separate pocket linings in stocking stitch are joined seamlessly into the front pieces. Sleeves are worked flat in double moss stitch with simple increases, then seamed and set into the armholes. Shoulders and side seams are sewn, fronts fold back slightly to form soft revers, and pocket linings are stitched down inside.

Skill level: Adventurous beginner to intermediate. You should be comfortable working knit and purl combinations, increasing, casting off for shaping, and sewing seams. No complex shaping techniques or charts are required.
