Baby's Lacy Aghan/Blanket & Bootees in 4-ply 1157
What you’ll make: A classic square lace baby shawl worked flat on a circular needle for ease, plus matching bootees knit flat with a tidy strap and buttonhole. Clean eyelet repeats block crisply; the bootees shape smoothly over the instep and fasten with buttons.
Sizing / Measurements: Shawl 113 cm square (approx. 44½ in). Bootees sized for newborn/infant.
Yarn: Modern 4-ply (fingering) baby yarn; smooth, non-hairy fibres show the eyelets best.
Needles & notions: 4.5 mm circular for shawl (worked flat), 3.75 mm for bootees; 2 buttons; blocking tools.
Tension (gauge): Shawl uses a repeating lace panel; work and block a swatch to confirm fabric and drape before beginning.
Yarn Suggestions: Rowan Summerlite 4ply (cotton); Sirdar Snuggly 4 Ply (easy-care); Cascade Heritage (wool/nylon); Berroco Ultra Wool Fine (superwash wool); DROPS Baby Merino (superwash merino); Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 4 ply (wool).
Construction notes: Shawl cast on flat with garter stabilisation at edges; 36-row repeat establishes the eyelet motif; finish with straight rows and a simple cast-off, then block to final dimensions. Bootees are knit flat: build the sole with pick-up increases, shape the instep with paired decreases and centred slip-one-knit-one-pass-slipped-stitch-over, then form a buttoned strap; sew sole and back seam.
Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate (comfortable with yarn overs, knit-two-together, slip-one-knit-one-pass-slipped-stitch-over, picking up stitches, and basic finishing).
