Textured Aran Sweater — Roll Neck or Crew Neck (Cables & Panels)
A classic Aran-weight sweater with strong vertical paneling (double moss stitch, twists, and cables), set-in sleeves, and two neckline options.
What you’ll make: A longline, textured sweater worked flat in pieces, with a choice of roll neck or crew neck finish.
Sizing / Measurements: To fit chest 32/34–44/46 ins (81/86–112/117 cms). Finished width 42–54 ins (106–137 cms); length 27–30 ins (68–76 cms); sleeve seam 17–20 ins (43–51 cms).
Yarn: Aran-weight yarn (wool or wool-blend), 100 g balls. Option A: 12 (13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 15) balls. Option B: 11 (11, 12, 12, 13, 13, 14) balls.
Needles & notions: 4 mm (UK 8, US 6) and 5 mm (UK 6, US 8) needles; cable needle; stitch holder(s) for centre neck stitches; tapestry needle for finishing.
Tension (gauge): 19 sts × 24 rs = 4 ins (10 cms) over stocking stitch on 5 mm needles.
Yarn Suggestions: Recommended yarn: Rowan Pure Wool Worsted. Also suitable: Sirdar Country Classic Aran; Hayfield Bonus Aran; Patons Wool Blend Aran; Cascade 220; Berroco Vintage; Cleckheaton Country 12 ply.
Construction notes: Ribbed hems are worked first, then the body and sleeves are worked in established panels. Front neck is shaped with decreases while maintaining panel placement. Shoulders are seamed, then stitches are picked up around the neckline for either a roll neck (rib then stocking stitch roll) or a crew neckband (rib, then fold and stitch down).
Skill level: Intermediate (panel repeats, cable crossings, shaping within pattern, set-in sleeves, neck pick-up, seaming).
