A classic hooded jacket worked in a simple cable-and-panel arrangement with ribbed trims and shaped armholes, finished with a pick-up rib neckband and ribbed armhole borders.

What you’ll make: Hooded jacket with two mirrored cable panels on the front, ribbed hem and trims, set-in style armhole shaping, ribbed neckband, and a shaped hood seamed at centre back.

Yarn: Double Knitting (DK) yarn held double throughout (equivalent in thickness to a chunky/bulky fabric when doubled). Use a smooth DK for clear stitch definition; an acrylic or acrylic-blend DK works well for an easy-care finish.

Needles & notions: 5.5 mm knitting needles; 6.5 mm knitting needles; cable needle; stitch holders; stitch markers; yarn needle for seaming.

Tension (gauge): 12.5 stitches and 17.5 rows to 10 cm over stocking stitch on 6.5 mm needles using yarn held double. Cable panel: 10 stitches measure 5 cm on 6.5 mm needles using yarn held double.

Recommended yarn: Stylecraft Life DK — 5 (6, 6, 6, 6) × 100 g balls, held double throughout.

Construction notes: Front is worked from the lower rib, then continued in a 16-row cable pattern with armhole markers and neck shaping. Back is worked in rib then stocking stitch to match the front, with shoulder cast-offs and stitches held for the neckband. Neckband and armhole borders are picked up and worked in rib. Hood begins with rib, then stocking stitch, shaped in two halves and seamed at centre back, then attached along the neckband pick-up row.
