Guernsey Sweater Knitting Pattern PDF
A classic, clean-lined sweater with a simple textured panel effect created by alternating patterned sections with stocking stitch, finished with a neat ribbed neckband and set-in sleeves.
What you’ll make: A long-sleeved sweater with straight body shaping, shoulder shaping, a shaped front neck, and separate sleeves, finished with a picked-up-and-knit neckband.
Yarn: 100% wool yarn of approximately Guernsey / 4-ply weight (50 g balls); 11 (12, 12, 13, 14, 14, 15) balls depending on size.
Needles & notions: 2¼ mm needles; 2¾ mm needles; 3 mm needles; stitch holders/spare needles; yarn needle for finishing; markers (optional).
Tension (gauge): 15 stitches and 17 rows to 5 cm over stocking stitch using 3 mm needles.
Yarn Suggestions: Rowan Fine Lace; Sirdar Snuggly 4 Ply; Cascade 220 Fingering; Knit Picks Palette; Malabrigo Lace; Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (lightly held, to match gauge only if you can achieve it); Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 4 Ply.
Construction notes: Worked flat in pieces (Back, Front, Sleeves) with a garter-stitch hem and upper band; main fabric alternates a simple knit-and-purl pattern with stocking stitch; shoulders and neck are shaped; sleeves are increased to the upper arm, then finished with a patterned section and cast off; neckband is picked up around the opening and worked in rib, then sewn down.
Skill level: Intermediate (accurate tension control, increasing/decreasing, picking up stitches, seaming)
