Women's Banded Cable Cardigan (Aran)
A classic, waist-to-hip length cable-panel cardigan with ribbed bands and neat set-in sleeves; written for four adult sizes.
What you’ll make: A textured cardigan featuring alternating cable panels on a stocking/garter groundwork, with separate front bands and a folded rib neckband for structure and comfort.
Yarn: Aran-weight yarn (approx. 19–22 × 50 g balls depending on size). Fibre content is flexible (pure wool or wool blends); swatch to pattern gauge.
Needles & notions: 4 mm and 5 mm needles; cable needle; 8 buttons; stitch holder; tapestry needle; blocking tools.
Tension (gauge): 21 sts × 24 rows = 10 cm (4 in) in pattern on 5 mm after gentle blocking.
Recommended yarn: Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted — 19 (20 : 21 : 22) × 50 g balls.
Also suitable (currently available): Rowan Kid Classic; Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Aran; Wendy With Wool Aran; Patons Wool Blend Aran; Cascade 220 (worsted/aran range); Malabrigo Rios (light worsted/aran range); Heirloom Merino Magic 10-ply (aran range).
Construction notes: Worked flat in pieces (back, right front, left front, sleeves) with a 6-row cable pattern repeat; fronts include separate button/buttonhole bands; shoulders are cast off and seamed; sleeves are set in; neckband is picked up around the neckline, doubled to the inside, and stitched down; finish with buttons to match the band spacing.
Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate (readable charts/rows, simple cable technique with C4F, tidy seaming, even pickup for bands and neck).
