Sampler-Style Patchwork Aran Cardigan

A textured, panelled Aran-weight cardigan worked from a modular 28-row block pattern, with set-in sleeves, a ribbed welt, and a classic button-front finish designed for strong stitch definition and a structured everyday fit.

What you’ll make: Adult cardigan with patterned back and fronts, set-in sleeves, ribbed welt, and matching button and buttonhole bands.

Yarn: Aran weight yarn (smooth wool or wool-blend recommended for clear cables and texture). Approx yarn quantities (50 g balls): 13 (15 : 17).

Tension (gauge): 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over stocking stitch on 5 mm needles.

Recommended yarn

Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted.

Approx yarn quantities (50 g balls): 13 (15 : 17).

Also suitable (currently available)

Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Aran, Stylecraft Special Aran, West Yorkshire Spinners Wool Revival Aran, Cascade 220 Worsted, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Worsted, Malabrigo Worsted.

Needles & notions: 4 mm and 5 mm knitting needles; cable needle; stitch holders/spare needle; tapestry needle; 3 buttons.

Construction notes: Ribbed welt worked on 4 mm needles, then body and sleeves worked on 5 mm needles using repeating 28-row pattern blocks. Back is worked straight to shoulders; fronts are worked with front-edge decreases for the opening and shaped at the shoulders; sleeves are worked from ribbed cuff with increases to sleeve head width and cast off loosely. Buttonhole band and plain button band are picked up and worked in rib, then bands are joined at the centre back neck before attaching buttons.

Skill level: Intermediate (cables, pattern placement, shaping, picking up stitches, buttonholes)
