Golden Brown chunky chenille cardigan Instant Digital Knitting Pattern Download

A plush, honeycomb-textured cardigan worked in chunky chenille yarn, designed as a soft, substantial layer with an easy fit and neat button-front bands. This is a cosy, tactile knit that shows off the structure of the cables while feeling velvety and comfortable to wear.

What you’ll make

A hip-length, long-sleeved cardigan in three adult sizes, worked flat in pieces with a wide honeycomb cable panel on the body, stocking stitch framing, and ribbed front bands with three buttons. The fit is relaxed with comfortable ease over the bust and a straight hem for easy layering.

Sizing / fit

To fit bust: 76–81 cm, 86–91 cm, 96–101 cm

Approximate finished bust: 97 cm, 108 cm, 120 cm

Approximate length from shoulder: 57 cm, 58 cm, 59 cm

Sleeve seam: 38 cm

Fit: relaxed, with generous ease over the stated bust measurements for layering over light tops or fine-gauge knits.

Yarn

Generic yarn type: chunky [bulky] chenille yarn (mainly polyester or microfibre) with a soft, velvety handle and enough body to hold the honeycomb texture.

Original yardage guidance: 15 (16, 17) × 50 g balls of chunky chenille yarn across the three sizes. If you substitute a yarn in 100 g balls, allow the equivalent of approximately 750 g, 800 g, 850 g of yarn in total, rounding up to the next full ball for safety.

Needles & notions

5 mm knitting needles, 6 mm knitting needles, cable needle, stitch holders, 3 buttons, yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

Tension (gauge)

14 stitches and 23 rows = 10 cm in stocking stitch using 6 mm needles, worked flat and blocked lightly.

Recommended yarn:

James C. Brett Flutterby Chunky (chunky chenille, 100 g balls). For this pattern, allow approximately 8 (9, 9) × 100 g balls for sizes 76–81 cm, 86–91 cm, 96–101 cm respectively, depending on your row gauge and any length adjustments.

Also suitable (currently available):

King Cole Yummy Chunky, Cygnet Chenille Chunky, YarnArt Dolce, Himalaya Dolphin Baby, Premier Parfait Chunky, Moda Vera Blanket Chenille or a similar chunky / bulky chenille-style polyester yarn that can be swatched to the stated gauge.

Construction notes

The back and fronts are worked flat from the lower rib up, then shaped at the armholes and shoulders. A wide honeycomb cable panel runs up the body, framed by panels of stocking stitch for clean lines and clear stitch definition. Sleeves are worked flat from the ribbed cuffs upward, then shaped to the sleeve cap and sewn into the armholes. Shoulders and side seams are sewn, and ribbed button and buttonhole bands are picked up along the fronts and around the back neck, with three buttonholes spaced evenly along one front.

Skill level

Intermediate: suitable for knitters comfortable with reading rows, working simple decreases, using a cable needle, and seaming pieces together. The shaping is straightforward, but the honeycomb pattern requires consistent row tracking.
