Cable Sweater – Super Bulky Drop-Shoulder Jumper Instant Digital Knitting Pattern PDF Download

This cable sweater is worked in super bulky yarn on very large needles to create a dramatic, sculptural fabric with deep ridged cables and a satisfyingly weighty drape. The back and front are worked the same, with straight sides, generous ease and simple drop-shoulder sleeves that are seamed into place for a relaxed, boxy fit. A short rib at the lower edge and cuffs anchors the shape while the wide, shallow neckline keeps the overall look soft and easy to wear over layers. Designed for super bulky (category #6) or light jumbo (category #7) yarns knitted on 10 mm (US 15) and 20 mm (US 36) needles, this is a fast, statement knit that showcases bold cables without complicated shaping. Suitable for confident beginners who are ready to work from a cable panel and enjoy a quick, high-impact project in six graded sizes from 76–102 cm (30–40 in) bust.

What you’ll make: A chunky, hip-length sweater with back and front worked alike, strong vertical cable panels on a stocking stitch background, long drop-shoulder sleeves and a wide, shallow neckline. Rib at the lower edge and cuffs gives a clean finish and helps the fabric sit neatly despite the generous gauge.

Sizing / fit: Six sizes to fit bust 76, 81, 86, 91, 97, 102 cm (30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 in). Designed as a relaxed, boxy jumper with drop shoulders and comfortable ease for layering over shirts, tees or lightweight knitwear. Length is approximately 58 cm (23 in) from shoulder for all sizes, with sleeve length around 46 cm (18 in).

Yarn: Super bulky / super chunky yarn (category #6, edging towards light jumbo) suitable for knitting at a loose gauge on 10 mm and larger needles. The sweater uses approximately 700–950 g of yarn across the size range (around 7–10 × 100 g balls in a typical super chunky wool or wool-blend), depending on size and personal tension.

Needles & notions: 5.5 mm (US 9) knitting needles, 10 mm (US 15) knitting needle, 20 mm (US 36) knitting needle, cable needle, stitch markers (optional), tapestry needle for sewing seams.

Tension (gauge): Approximately 4 stitches to 5 cm (2 in) over stocking stitch, worked as in the pattern using one 10 mm (US 15) needle and one 20 mm (US 36) needle. This equates to about 8 stitches to 10 cm (4 in); always work and block a gauge swatch and adjust needle size if needed.

Recommended yarn: Rowan Big Wool (super chunky; 100% wool; 100 g balls) – approximately 7–10 × 100 g balls, depending on size and individual tension.

Also suitable (currently available): Stylecraft Special XL Super Chunky, Sirdar Hayfield Super Chunky with Wool, King Cole Big Value Super Chunky, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, Bernat Softee Chunky (worked at a looser gauge), Drops Snow, Patons Inca 14 ply.

Construction notes: Back and front are worked flat from the lower rib upwards, with minimal shaping and identical cable panel placement on each piece. The armholes and shoulders are shaped with simple cast-offs, then the shoulder seams are joined before picking up and attaching the sleeves. Sleeves are worked as straight pieces and set into dropped armholes, and all seams are finished with mattress or back stitch. Blocking helps the cables relax and the fabric lie smoothly.

Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate – suitable for knitters comfortable with knit and purl, working from a simple cable panel, basic shaping by casting off and sewing seams.
