Chunky Tweed Wool Jacket with Pockets Instant Digital Knitting Pattern PDF Download
A warm, wool-rich chunky jacket with neat buttoned fronts and optional pockets, designed to be worked in tweed-effect or heathered yarns that flatter simple texture. This is an everyday outer layer with enough structure to sit between a cardigan and a light coat.
What you’ll make
A hip-length chunky jacket worked in pieces, with front button bands, a straight back, full-length set-in sleeves and a simple collar. The lower edges and borders are worked in seed stitch for a firm, tidy finish, and you can add lined front pockets for extra practicality.
Sizing / fit
To fit bust: 76/81, 86/91, 97/102, 107/112 cm (28, 30/32, 34/36, 38/40, 42/44 in).
Finished bust: approx. 91, 102, 112, 122, 132 cm (36, 40, 44, 48, 52 in).
Length from lower edge to shoulder: approx. 64, 74, 74, 74, 74 cm (25, 29, 29, 29, 29 in).
Sleeve length: approx. 41, 43, 46, 48, 48 cm (16, 17, 18, 19, 19 in).
The jacket is designed with comfortable ease for layering over light to medium-weight garments.
Yarn
Chunky (bulky / 12-ply) wool-rich yarn, ideally with a tweed or heathered effect to echo the original look.
Yarn quantities (using 100 g balls): 8 (9, 10, 10, 11) balls, depending on size.
Choose a fibre blend with a strong wool content for warmth and structure; a small amount of nylon, hemp or similar fibre for strength is also suitable.
Needles & notions
6 mm knitting needles (main fabric)
5 mm knitting needles (borders and bands)
Stitch holders
8 (9, 9, 9, 9) buttons
Yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends
Optional: stitch markers and blocking tools
Tension (gauge)
14 stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over the main body pattern on 6 mm needles, after light blocking.
Always work and measure a gauge swatch; adjust needle size if needed to obtain the correct tension.
Recommended yarn:
Rowan Hemp Tweed Chunky – a wool-rich, tweed-effect chunky yarn (75% wool, 25% hemp) with a rustic, slightly flecked surface and a gauge close to 14 stitches over 10 cm on 6 mm needles. This gives a warm, structured fabric with subtle tweed depth that suits this jacket perfectly.
Also suitable (currently available):
James C Brett Rustic Chunky (chunky, wool-blend tweed), Hayfield Bonus Chunky Tweed (chunky, tweed-effect budget option), Cascade 128 Superwash (chunky, 100% superwash merino), Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky (bulky, wool–mohair blend with gentle heathering)
Construction notes
The jacket is worked flat in separate pieces: back, left front, right front and sleeves. Seed-stitch lower borders are followed by straightforward stocking-stitch–based body fabric. Pockets are worked as separate linings and joined into the fronts as you go. Once the body pieces are completed, the shoulders are joined, sleeve heads are set in, and side and sleeve seams are sewn. Front borders are picked up and worked in seed stitch with buttonholes on one side, and the collar is picked up around the neckline and finished in seed stitch to match the rest of the trims.
Skill level
Intermediate: suitable for knitters who are comfortable working from written instructions, shaping pieces, picking up stitches for borders and collars, and seaming garments neatly.
