Women's Cable & Diamond Jumper/Sweater

What you’ll make A women’s aran-weight jumper with bold cable and diamond panels, neat saddle shoulders and a deep ribbed crew neck. The fabric is warm and substantial without being bulky, giving a classic, slightly fitted silhouette that works with jeans, skirts or tailoring.

Sizing / Measurements Designed to fit bust 76–81, 86–91 and 96–101 cm (approximately 30–32, 34–36 and 38–40 in). Finished chest is approximately 94, 105 and 117 cm to allow comfortable ease over light layers. Length is around 51, 52 and 53 cm from shoulder, with a sleeve seam of about 46 cm.

Yarn Aran (10 ply / heavy worsted) wool or wool-rich yarn with good stitch definition. You will need approximately 1280 [1360: 1440] metres (about 1400 [1490: 1575] yards) of aran-weight yarn in total, allowing for swatching and minor variations in individual tension.

Needles & notions 3.75 mm and 4.5 mm (US 5 and 7) straight needles, plus a cable needle, stitch holders, row counter (optional), markers for sleeve and shoulder positioning, and the usual finishing tools (tapestry needle, blocking tools).

Tension (gauge) 24 stitches and 25 rows to 10 cm measured over the cable and diamond pattern using 4.5 mm needles, after light blocking. Working and measuring a swatch is essential for a good fit; adjust needle size if necessary to match this gauge.

Recommended yarn:
Rowan Kid Classic (aran-weight lambswool and kid mohair blend; approximately 140 m per 50 g ball; 70% lambswool, 22% kid mohair, 8% polyamide).
For this pattern you will need approximately 10 [10: 11] × 50 g balls of Rowan Kid Classic to cover all three sizes with a comfortable allowance.

Also suitable (currently available):
Wendy Pure Wool Aran, Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Aran, Cascade 220, Malabrigo Rios, Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 10 ply.
Choose a mainly wool or wool-rich yarn if you want a similar weight and structure to the original; always check ball length and buy enough balls to meet or exceed the total metre/yard requirement for your chosen size.

Construction notes The jumper is worked flat in pieces and seamed. Back and front are knitted bottom-up with the cable and diamond panels set between columns of reverse stocking stitch. Shoulder shaping is worked into saddle extensions that carry the pattern up into the neckline. Sleeves are worked flat from the cuff, shaped with increases, and extended into matching saddle pieces. A deep ribbed neckband is picked up around the neckline and worked in knit one, purl one rib before being cast off in rib.

Skill level Intermediate. You should be comfortable reading row-by-row instructions, working simple cable crosses using a cable needle, shaping by increasing and decreasing while maintaining pattern panels, and seaming pieces together neatly.
