Babies’ Garter Stitch Cardigans (V-Neck or Button-Up 1198 - Knitting Pattern PDF - Instant Download - Marle & Row
Classic garter-stitch baby cardigans designed for warmth and easy wear; choose either a tidy V-neck or a straight button-up front, both worked flat with integrated borders for a neat finish.
What you’ll make: Two cardigan options in garter stitch with slipped-stitch front borders; set-in sleeves are picked up and worked down for a smooth armhole; button bands are built in for clean edges.
Sizing / Measurements: To fit chest 34 / 38 / 42 cm (13½ / 15 / 16½ in). Back-neck to hem 16 / 19 / 22 cm (6½ / 7½ / 8½ in). Sleeve seam 10 / 12.5 / 15 cm (4 / 5 / 6 in). Intended for low-birth-weight to early-months wear; choose the chest size with a little ease.
Yarn: DK (double knitting) weight; approx 100 g per cardigan (typical DK ~240–300 m per 100 g). Choose a soft, baby-suitable fibre (superwash wool, cotton-blend, or premium acrylic).
Needles & notions: 3.75 mm and 4 mm needles (or size to obtain tension); stitch holders; buttons: V-neck 3 [4 : 4], Button-up 5 [6 : 6].
Tension (gauge): 20 sts × 40 rows = 10 cm × 10 cm in garter stitch on 4 mm needles (adjust needle size to match).
Recommended yarn: Rowan Baby Cashsoft Merino DK — Yarn quantities (50 g balls): 2 (2) (2).
Also suitable (currently available): Sirdar Snuggly DK, Stylecraft Special DK, King Cole Cherished DK, James C. Brett Baby DK, Lion Brand Baby Soft (DK), Cascade Anthem DK, Bernat Softee Baby (Light 3), Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton 8-ply, Heirloom Merino Magic 8-ply.
Construction notes: Front worked first with integrated rib/border; stitches are added for the back neck and the entire back is worked in one piece; sleeves are picked up around the armhole and knit down; minimal seaming (sides and sleeve seams only); final neckband in simple rib with a final buttonhole as directed.
Skill level: Confident beginner / improver (straight garter stitch with simple shaping, picked-up stitches, and basic buttonholes).
